- I will use what I learn to protect the needy and enlighten the ignorant.
- I will respect my peers and hold my seniors in high esteem.
- I will bring my sensei devotion, loyalty and respect but never shame or dishonour.
- I will improve the world by purifying my spirit and becoming the best that I can be.
- I will help Hinansho to grow and always act within its best interests.
Club Rules
While promoting a friendly atmosphere, Hinansho requires members to be polite and respectful of seniors and other students at all times. Rules to be followed are:
Etiquette:
- Bow when entering and leaving the main hall of the Dojo. The exception to this is if you are unable to bow properly and respectfully; for example, carrying an armful of equipment out to the Sensei's vehicle. In this case, you should simply just bow on your return to the dojo.
- Bow to the Sensei when excusing your self from and returning to class, whether it be leaving the dojo or leaving the class to have a drink or anything similar.
- You may bow to the Sensei or any others as greeting and farewell if you wish (this is optional).
Uniform:
- Wear the approved uniform to all classes - Gi pants and top with crest and the appropriate belt. In summer students can wear a plain white short sleeved or sleeveless shirt without pictures, patterns or visible logos (black for black belts). Upper or lower underwear should not visible. Out of uniform students must line up at the back of the class behind the white belts.
- Keep your uniform clean and tidy, turning away from others when adjusting yourself.
- When in uniform, in the dojo or in public, behave accordingly.
- For those wanting a little more detail, the belt's tips should be on the left. This is not an enforced rule.
Behaviour:
- Be ready to stop and listen when the Sensei speaks.
- Never argue, backchat, or show bad attitude to the Sensei or Seniors. Any problems should be solved in private with the parties concerned.
- Consult your Sensei before undertaking any other martial arts or combat related study. Besides the confusion that studying more than one style at a time can cause, it is also disrespectful to start another style without your Sensei's knowledge and blessing. A student found to be doing another style without having consulted their Sensei will usually just receive a warning whereas a student found to be doing another style after their Sensei has already disapproved their request is being highly disrespectful to the point where expulsion could be an option.
- Report all injuries to your Sensei. This is not only for insurance purposes, it is to ensure the safety of all students, and includes injuries obtained during class or outside of training that may be aggravated by certain training activities. No responsibility will be accepted on the part of the club if students do not disclose such information.
Gradings:
- Display your respect for the grading applicants by being punctual, quiet and attentive.
- Gradings are a "full-dress uniform" occasion. This means Gi pants and top with the crest and the appropriate belt with the correct amount of tips. Any under-garments should be of the same colour as the Gi top and not stand out under it. This includes patterns, pictures or writing. All clothing should be clean and tidy. If students can not fulfil these requirements for any reason, they are to consult with their Sensei as soon as possible.
- You may request a specific partner for your Grading, but your choice must be within 2 grades of yourself and the final decision is the Sensei's
- On the day of a Grading your Sensei is prohibited from assisting you with questions that my have a bearing on your Grading and so please do not ask. Instead, compare notes with your peers and help each other out.
- The Grader's Assistant is in charge of all students not performing their grading at the time. Students are to address all questions and requests to the Grader's Assistant and bow to them as they would their Sensei. Students from the watching area are not to address the Sensei Grading Panel directly. If a problem arises of such importance, the Grader's Assistant will make the decision of whether to approach the Panel.
General:
- Bring your training card to every class and be ready to accept it at the end of class with the appropriate response.
- Do not indulge in conflict with other students, but either resolve the matter peacefully or take it to the Sensei quietly.
- Lead by example.
- Do not compare your skills, attendance or progression with others students. All students are individuals with different gifts, priorities and learning speeds and to compare yourself to them is futile and pointless, just like comparing apples to oranges. Comparison often makes people feel embarrassed, envious or disappointed that they have not developed at the same rate of other students and in a martial-art, this is not only not useful, but can be needlessly damaging to people's feelings.
- Membership is for life with no hidden termination rules regarding the amount of time a student may be absent from training. Membership is finalised only if the student formally resigns either verbally or in writing or is formally expelled by the Head Sensei. A student who has previously resigned may request to re-instate their membership at any time but they must then pay for the new membership at the current membership price. The Head Sensei reserves the right to deny any membership, be it new or a renewal.
